A Full Evaluation of Your Oral Health

Unlike a quick checkup focused on one painful tooth, a comprehensive exam looks at the big picture. We evaluate how the parts of your mouth relate to one another and determine whether any condition needs treatment, closer monitoring, or a more specialized evaluation. We help you address:

  • Establishing a baseline when you are new or returning after a long absence.
  • Evaluating the condition of your teeth, gums, bite, and jaw joints.
  • Checking existing fillings, crowns, bridges, and implants for wear or failure.
  • Screening soft tissues for unusual changes or abnormalities.
  • Determining the appropriate digital X-rays or diagnostic imaging for your specific needs.

Modern Digital Records Rooted in Dearborn

When Dr. Mohammad Hammoud took over this Michigan Avenue practice, the office still relied on paper charts and film X-rays. He completely modernized the facility by building its diagnostics around fully digital charting and advanced imaging. During your comprehensive exam, this digital system documents your current condition clearly and provides a precise baseline for comparing changes at future visits. Technology supports our examination, but it never replaces a careful clinical evaluation and a real conversation about your health.

Maintenance and Care Tips After Your Comprehensive Exam

Once your baseline has been established and your immediate treatment plan is clear, protecting your investment at home is the most important step you can take:

  • Stick to your recommended schedule: Use the timeline we give you to plan your periodic recall visits rather than waiting for discomfort to force a call.
  • Maintain daily hygiene: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily to prevent plaque from building around existing restorations.
  • Monitor for new changes: Pay close attention to temperature sensitivity, gum bleeding, or bite discomfort, and bring them up at your next visit.
  • Follow up on treatment priorities: If your comprehensive exam revealed areas needing restorative or preventive work, address them in the structured order we outlined to prevent minor issues from growing.
FAQ

Comprehensive Dental Exam FAQs

Is a comprehensive dental exam the same as a regular checkup?

Not exactly. A comprehensive exam establishes a full baseline, while a periodic checkup looks for changes since a previous comprehensive or periodic evaluation. New patients and people returning after a long gap often begin with a comprehensive exam.

It includes a review of your health and dental history followed by an evaluation of your teeth, gums, bite, jaw, visible oral tissues, and existing dental work. Diagnostic X-rays are added when they are needed to answer questions the clinical examination cannot answer on its own.

Not necessarily. We prescribe X-rays according to your symptoms, examination findings, disease risk, and the age and quality of any previous images. A comprehensive exam does not automatically require every type of dental image.

Not at every preventive visit. Once we have established a baseline, periodic exams are generally used to monitor changes. Another comprehensive evaluation can be appropriate after a long absence from care or a significant change in your health or dental condition.
