Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is a thorough, non-surgical deep cleaning procedure used to treat periodontitis — advanced gum disease that has caused the gums to pull away from the teeth, creating pockets where bacteria accumulate. Using specialised instruments, our hygienist or dentist carefully removes hardened tartar and bacterial deposits from both above and below the gum line, then smooths the root surfaces to discourage further plaque adhesion and promote gum reattachment. The procedure is typically performed under local anaesthesia for complete comfort and may require multiple appointments depending on severity. Following treatment, most patients experience significant improvement in gum health, reduced pocket depths, and a solid foundation for long-term periodontal stability.

A gingivectomy is a surgical procedure that removes excess or diseased gum tissue to eliminate deep periodontal pockets, improve access for thorough cleaning, and restore gum health. It is performed when non-surgical treatments such as scaling and root planing have not sufficiently resolved persistent gum disease, or when overgrown tissue — caused by certain medications, genetics, or inflammation — interferes with oral hygiene and function. The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, and the reshaped gum tissue heals cleanly within a few weeks. Gingivectomy can also be performed for purely aesthetic reasons to correct a gummy smile. The result is healthier, better-contoured gum tissue that is significantly easier to maintain with daily brushing and flossing.
