Severe tooth pain, swelling, a broken tooth, a lost restoration, or a dental injury needs the right evaluation before anyone can tell you what treatment will help. An emergency dental exam focuses on the immediate concern, identifies the likely source, and determines what needs to happen next.
An emergency dental exam is a problem-focused evaluation designed to address acute discomfort and protect your health. We help you address:
Exam Type | When It Fits Best | What the Appointment Focuses On |
|---|---|---|
Emergency Dental Exam | You are experiencing severe pain, swelling, broken teeth, or dental trauma. | Diagnosing your immediate urgent problem and determining the safest next step for relief. |
Comprehensive Oral Exam | You are a new patient, have not visited a dentist in years, or experienced a major health change. | Establishing a complete baseline of your teeth, gums, bite, soft tissues, and existing dental work. |
Periodic Recall Exam | You are an established patient returning on a regular schedule to maintain your oral health. | Monitoring minor changes, gum health, and wear since your baseline evaluation was set. |
Call our office directly to share what happened, when it started, and whether you have swelling, bleeding, or trauma so we can provide fast guidance.
We review your medical history and examine the specific tooth, restoration, or injury causing your discomfort using appropriate diagnostic testing.

Sometimes. Same-day treatment depends on the diagnosis, procedure required, medical considerations, and available appointment time. If definitive treatment cannot be completed that day, we will explain what can be done immediately and how the next appointment should be arranged.
Not always. We prescribe diagnostic images when they are needed to evaluate areas that cannot be assessed fully through the clinical examination. The type of image depends on the tooth, injury, symptoms, and suspected source of the problem.
Sometimes. Whether a tooth can be saved depends on the extent of decay or damage, the condition of the root and supporting tissues, and whether enough healthy tooth remains for a predictable restoration. We will tell you directly if repair is reasonable or extraction needs to be considered.
If you have severe tooth pain, localized swelling, a broken tooth, or a dental injury, call our Dearborn team directly for prompt scheduling guidance.
