Not every early spot of decay requires a dental drill. We offer targeted Curodont applications to support weakened enamel on small, early-stage lesions, helping to potentially prevent the cavity from growing.
Early tooth decay starts beneath the surface of the enamel before an actual hole forms. When we catch a lesion at this initial stage, we can apply Curodont, a liquid that contains a peptide and fluoride. The peptide soaks into the early lesion and forms a framework that draws calcium and phosphate from your saliva, so new mineral can form where the enamel was weakened. We use this non-invasive approach to help you by:
| Clinical Factor | No-Drill Cavity Treatment | Traditional Dental Filling |
|---|---|---|
| Target Stage | Initial stage decay confined to the outer enamel | Cavities that have progressed into irreversible decay |
| Application Method | Liquid formulation diffuses directly into the porous enamel | Mechanical drilling removes decayed tissue before placing composite resin |
| Anesthesia | No injection or numbing required | Local anesthetic typically needed to numb the tooth |
| Chair Time | Usually a few minutes per tooth | Requires a longer dedicated restorative appointment |
We look for early mineral loss and initial stage decay on your digital X-rays before the enamel collapses.
We clean and dry the specific tooth so the Curodont liquid can effectively reach the porous surface.
We apply the tasteless, non-staining Curodont liquid directly to the early lesion to diffuse throughout the enamel.
We check the spot again at your next checkup to see whether the lesion has stayed small.
When Dr. Mohammad Hammoud evaluates your digital X-rays in our Dearborn office, the goal is conservative care. Using Curodont gives us a tool to address borderline lesions early and potentially prevent the cavity from growing. However, if decay has already broken through the enamel and caused irreversible structural damage, this liquid application is no longer an option. In those cases, we will explain why a filling is the right next step to remove the decay and protect the tooth.
It cannot replace a filling if a physical hole has already formed in the tooth structure. We only use this application on initial stage decay where the outer surface is still intact.
Curodont is made for use on baby teeth as well as adult teeth, and we apply it under the dentist’s supervision. With no drilling or numbing, most children find the short appointment easy to sit through.
Fluoride varnish is painted over the teeth to strengthen enamel in general. Curodont goes on one early lesion, and its peptide is designed to soak into it. Curodont also contains fluoride, so it is not a fluoride-free option.
You will feel standard instruments resting against your lips and teeth, but the process does not involve dental drills or injection needles. The liquid itself is tasteless and applies smoothly.
If you have been told you have an early spot of decay, contact our Dearborn team to find out whether a no-drill option fits your situation.
